BECOME A BLOGGER IN THREE EASY STEPS:
1) DOMAIN NAME AND HOSTING
This is part of the fun! This is when you get to decide what do you want your domain name to be?
Ours is tattooedhomestead.com, after the tattooedbeekeeper.com and the tattooedbeekeeperswife.com it seemed like a no brain-er. But, for you, this is where you get to be creative! Are you a Farm, a Homestead, a Commune? Have you had a name picked out for ages or did one spring to your mind? You get to invent yourself as everything you ever wanted to be!
Once you’ve thought up some name options, head over to Bluehost.com to see if your domain name is available.
If it’s available you will be asked to pick your plan level.
We did the Starter Plan, which is paid in one lump sum instead of monthly, because it’ll save you quite a bit of cash in the long run.
This is where you’ll host your domain name and your Blog. Hosting is like renting space on the web to display your blog. Bluehost has reasonable prices and gives you your domain name for free if you decide to host with them.
The Domain Privacy Protection shields your personal address and phone number from being displayed to the public.
The Site Backup Pro can give you peace of mind should something go wrong while you are building your blog.
2) INSTALLING WORDPRESS
Once you’re registered with Bluehost you’ll need to go through the process of installing WordPress.
WordPress is a blogging software. It’s the software that I use for tattooedhomestead.com and it’s the most widely accepted Blogging software in the Blogosphere. The best part is that it’s SUPER easy to use and install and there is a lot of information out there on customizing it and fixing things if you run into trouble.
Let’s get started:
Login to Bluehost and find the Website Builders section.
Click on the WordPress logo.
Then click the “Install” button in the “Do it yourself FREE” section.
Click the “Check Domain” button.
Check the terms and conditions box and then click the “Install Now” button.
Once you get the message that says “Your install is complete!” you’ll want to click on the “View Credentials” button and write down your Admin URL, Username, and Password.
You can change these to something more memorable later, but you’ll need them for your first time logging in.
Type your Admin URL into your web browser. You’ll see a login screen like the one below. Enter your Username and Password you copied down from the previous step.
You’ve officially logged into your blog. Congrats!
3) MAKING IT PRETTY
At this point, you officially have your own Homestead blog!
Welcome to the Blogosphere, my friend! You’re just a blog post away from sharing your new adventures with the world!
Before you jump into there are a few things you can do to spiffy up your blog.
It’s time to pick your theme!
WordPress has tons of free WordPress themes to pick from here.
There are lots to choose from, free or paid for or you can even design one from scratch, though that is another lesson 🙂
